Mr. Melvin Williams, VP at S&ME, provided his insights to The Citadel’s 2020 graduating class. You can find his words of wisdom on Facebook and Instagram. Mr. Neeld Wilson’s article on “Examining SDVOSB Certification” was published in the Nov-Dec 2019 issue of TME. His publication discusses enacting a single system for certifying service-disabled veteran-owned businesses and how it is still a work in progress.

Post Awards

The Charleston Post was selected by SAME National as the 2017 Top Medium Post in the Society! This international recognition was achieved due to the outstanding involvement of YOU, the members. You are a part of an extremely engaged group of engineers and architects who are actively involved in volunteer efforts, community events, and vital support of the future of our industry through educational outreach. On behalf of the Charleston Post, we humbly accept this award in your honor. The formal award was presented at the Joint Engineer Training Conference (JETC) in Kansas City, MO during the Society Leadership & Post Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, May 23.

Mr. Melvin Williams Elected to SAME 2021 Class of Fellows & Elected Vice Chair-Elect for ACEC

Melvin C. Williams, F.SAME, FACEC, Vice President and Senior Business Developer with S&ME, Inc. has been named Vice Chair-Elect for the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) and will be sworn in at ACEC’s Annual Conference in April.  As Vice Chair; he will serve on the ACEC Board of Directors and Executive Committee for a term of two years.  Responsibilities will consist of overseeing the overall governance of the organization along with serving as a liaison between ACEC National and a minimum of six (6) of the 52 Member Organizations across the United States.  Williams will also serve on several national committees including the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee.

Williams was also nominated by his peers and elected to the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) 2021 Class of Fellows.  The SAME Academy of Fellows recognizes those members who have rendered dedicated and outstanding service to the Society, military engineering, and the A/E/C profession. SAME has bestowed the title of Fellow on select members since 1972; however, in 1995 an academy was founded to formally acknowledge these distinguished individuals for their dedication to SAME and the A/E/C profession. Today, there are more than 800 members of the Academy of Fellows.

Finally, Williams was nominated by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of South Carolina and elected to the ACEC 2021 Class of Fellows.  The College of Fellows is a distinguished class of engineers who have been selected by their peers as deserving recognition for exemplary contributions to the profession. Election to the College of Fellows is administered by the Fellows Committee, which also coordinates all Fellows activities and programs.

Mr. Neeld Wilson Receives SAME National IGE Award

The president of Gator Engineering & Aquifer Restoration Inc. (GEAR) and member of the Charleston Post, Mr. Neeld Wilson, received the National SAME IGE award at the JETC convention in Kansas City on May 25, 2018.  The SAME IGE recognized Mr. Wilson’s dedicated effort to have the Small Business Administration (SBA) rescind the Self-Certification status for Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) in the System for Awards Management (SAM). Mr. Wilson was a member of the Rule Change Focus Group that included the SBA, Department of Veterans Affairs, and SAME.  Mr. Wilson’s 2016 White Paper on SDVOSB opportunities was selected by General Joseph Schroedel, the Executive Director of the Society of American Military Engineers, as a National Finalist to represent SAME in this important endeavor.

Col. (Ret.) Ronald Welch Receives SAME National Bliss Award

Charleston Post member Col. Ronald Welch, Ph.D, P.E., F.SAME, USA (Ret.), of the Citadel received the Bliss Metal at the JETC convention in Kansas City on May 25, 2018.  The SAME Bliss Medal is awarded to a SAME member in recognition of superior efforts in mentoring students in engineering and related disciplines. The medal is named in honor of Gen. Tasker H. Bliss, USA, and was first awarded in 1958.

Col. (Ret.) Dave McNeil Named SC Small Business Person of the Year

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has just unveiled the winners of the 2018 Small Business Person of the Year award. Each year the SBA recognizes and honors one small business owner from each state including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, as the Small Business Person of the Year. South Carolina’s recipient for the 2018 Small Business Person of the Year award is Colonel (Ret.) Dave McNeil, President and CEO of Hannah Solar Government Services (HSGS).

Melvin Williams Appointed to Two National Committees

Melvin C. Williams, Vice President with S&ME, Inc. has been appointed to two American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) National Committees. Williams has been appointed to the ACEC National Transportation Steering Committee and the American Council of Engineering Companies-American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Joint Committee.

Streamers recognize Post contributions to the SAME Strategic Plan. Below are the Streamer results for the Charleston Post for the past few years. If you have any questions about our streamer results, please reach out to a board member. In 2020, Streamers were different than previous years due to COVID-19. Starting in 2021, Streamer Awards are based on the support of the SAME 2025 Strategic Plan. One streamer is now awarded based on the Post’s support in five goals towards the Strategic Plan. More information can be found on National’s website.
