SAME’s highest award was not authorized until 1926, and in that year seven recipients were retroactively selected for the award, each to represent one of the years 1920 to 1926:

Percy E. Barbour
Col. C.H. Birdseye
Col. Harrison Brand
Col. P.S. Bond
D. W. Dodge
Charles H. Smith
Col. G.A. Youngberg

Since 1927, the medal has been presented to a recipient every year. Only three members have been awarded the medal a second time, Rear Adm. Braccia and Col. Markle in 1979, and Brig. Gen. Bachus in 1992. Only five times (1958, 1973, 1979, 1980, and 1994) has there been more than one person selected for the annual award in the same year.

**Gold Eagle clasp authorized in 1979 for presentation to second Gold Medal winners.
