SAME Honolulu Post awarded outstanding students at the 55th Hawaii State Science and Engineering Fair held April 2-4, 2012 at the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. A total of $1,000 was awarded to junior and senior science and engineering research projects. The Post also awarded Erin Yagi from Waipahu Intermediate School for the Outstanding School Project Award.
Post member Maj. Sally Hannan, Honolulu District, USACE served as a speaker at the Science Works! Symposium. More than 500 students and teachers attended the symposium. Describing details of her work as an engineer, Maj. Hannan showed a video of military engineers at work and impressed 6th through 12th graders with stories of how she “had the best job in the world.” The symposium also featured scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and a volcanologist- turned inventor. One student gushed "I really liked the cool video showing stuff blowing up!”
