PURPOSE: The purpose of this scholarship program is to assist in the development of engineering and architecture talent among permanent residents of Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) and Republic of Palau (ROP).

SCOPE: It is the intent of this scholarship program to provide a one-year scholarship to selected students interested in obtaining a bachelor’s or advanced degree in engineering or architecture.

a) The Guam Post may provide a one-year scholarship of up to $3,500 for students who will be attending their first or second year of college and are enrolled in or intend to enroll in an engineering or architecture program at a college or university approved by the Guam Post and leading to an accredited bachelor’s degree;

b) The Guam Post may provide a one-year scholarship of up to $5,000 for students enrolled in an upper level engineering or architecture program approved by the Guam Post and leading to an accredited bachelor’s or advanced degree.

Scholarship recipients will be selected on an annual basis with the types and numbers of scholarships to be awarded dependent upon the availability of scholarship funds and the number of eligible candidates. Consideration will be given to awarding scholarships to prior year awardees.

ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible for the scholarship, a candidate must meet the following qualifications:

a) Be a permanent resident of Guam, CNMI, FSM, ROP, or a dependent of active duty or reserve military personnel who are from Guam, CNMI, FSM, or ROP, as described under “Purpose”;

b) Exhibit sincere interest in obtaining an engineering or architecture undergraduate degree and returning to Guam, CNMI, FSM, or ROP after graduation to begin their professional career;

c) Be accepted to or plan to enroll in an accredited engineering or architecture program. (A candidate may apply for the scholarship before being accepted to the undergraduate program).

To Apply: Submit the following by Friday, February 28, 2025, 5:00 PM, Guam local time:

a) The attached 2-page SAME Application for Engineering/Architecture Scholarship;

b) Education Goals – 500 Word Essay;

c) Provide a minimum of two (2) letters of recommendation from persons who are well acquainted with the applicant and can vouch for his or her character, integrity, sincerity, and ability to work with others. One letter shall be from an official from the school most recently attended. All applicants, including past recipients, must submit two letters of recommendation. (Do not include recommendations from immediate family members.)

d) Official School transcript (High School or College transcript as applicable); electronic copy is not acceptable.

e) SAT or other standard achievement test results. If you did not take one of these tests, please state as such on the application form;

f) Students already enrolled in college programs must submit their grades from the last quarter/semester and class schedule for the next quarter/semester.

Annual Charlie Corn Scholarship Golf Tournament Facts

The Charlie Corn Scholarship Golf Tournament

Guamanians in tune with the island’s golf scene are probably familiar with the annual Society of American Military Engineers’ Charlie Corn Scholarship Golf Tournament. The Charlie Corn Golf Tournament is the longest running (since 1978) annual charity benefit event on Guam. Sponsored by the Guam Post of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), it benefits those young men and women studying engineering or architecture at an accredited college or university with the intention of offering their professional services on Guam or neighboring islands after graduation. For the 2023-2024 academic year, the Guam SAME Post awarded 10 scholarships totaling $33,000, varying in size from $2,500 to $4,500.

Quick but Amazing Facts

The Charlie Corn Golf Tournament is an annual charity benefit event hosted by the SAME Guam Post and supported by generous sponsors and gracious volunteers.
Proceeds from the Golf Tournament go directly towards the Charlie Corn scholarship program and engineering education.
Scholarships are offered to residents of the Marianas and Micronesian islands, including Yap, who are current high school seniors or university students pursuing or planning to pursue a full-time undergraduate technical degree in an accredited engineering or architectural program.
The number and amount of scholarships awarded are dependent on the amount of available funding and the size and quality of the applicant pool.
In the last 14 years alone, the scholarship program awarded 120 scholarships totaling $341,000 (in amounts ranging from $1,500 to $5,000).
Applicants are ranked by GPA, community service, financial need, and other related factors.
Awardees are invited to attend a SAME Guam Post General Membership Meeting where they are recognized for their academic and other achievements.
Changes in the tournament’s format have resulted in greater revenues since 2010, which coincidentally paralleled the advent of the University of Guam’s Pre-Engineering Program. As a result, the SAME Guam Post has been awarding more scholarships in greater amounts than ever before.
