Topic:

Punalu’u Stream Restoration Project

Presenter:

Jesse Frey, PE

Senior Capital Program Manager

Kamehameha Schools

Presentation Synopsis:

Punalu’u, once described as a “place of abundance” with a thriving agricultural ecosystem, was negatively impacted over the years leading to extensive flooding and neglect of the area, causing great economic hardship. The project restored the natural valley floodplain and terraces, relocated farmers from flood-prone lands to elevated terraces, and reconnected Punalu’u Stream with its floodplain, enhancing the ecosystem’s health and resilience against chronic flooding, while providing new and enhanced habitats for native species.  With its completion and valley restored, cultural and natural resources are protected, community learning and engagement opportunities surged, and agricultural sustainability improved.
