GEMS is a fun and exciting way for 5th-8th Grade Students and their parents to explore STEM careers.  The program aims to increase our local STEM workforce in three ways:

  • Spark interest in STEM through fun, hands-on workshops led by local STEM educators and professionals.
  • Generate awareness of STEM careers in our local community through guest speakers and company-branded giveaways.
  • Empower parents to inspire and support their child’s journey to a STEM career through sessions about education and career planning.

GEMS is a non-profit program that is financed by grants, sponsors, and donations. The program is planned and executed by volunteers from SAME Mobile Post and the University of South Alabama, and every penny raised goes directly into the program!  2023 sponsors included SAME Mobile Post, Poarch Band of Creek Indians, TetraTech, FMC, BASF, Outokumpu, Pond, Thompson Engineering, Southern Earth Sciences, Jade Consulting, Chevron, and Terracon.  Thanks to them, GEMS 2023 provided 23 workshops to 162 students and 48 parents from 31 schools in Alabama and Mississippi!  We are on track for an even bigger GEMS 2024!!
