Come hear about the Air Force Institute of Technology’s mission along with a description of the five schools, focusing on the School of Systems and Logistics and the Civil Engineering School and their importance to the government and industry engineer community from the current Associate Dean of the School of Systems and Logistics, Mr. Dana G. Allen.
Mr. Allen previously served as the Chief Engineer of the Special Programs Division at the Architecture and Integration Directorate at Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, WPAFB, OH and prior to that he was the Chief of the Acquisition Environmental Integration Branch, Acquisition and Industrial Facilities Division, AFLCMC. Prior to re-joining the Air Force as a civil servant, he worked for NAVAIR in the F-35 Joint Program office in Crystal City, VA, where he was the Deputy Lead of the Air Vehicle IPT and the Lead Airframe Engineer.
Mr. Allen earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering at United States Air Force Academy and a Master of Science in Aeronautical Engineering at AFIT. He served as an active duty Aeronautical Engineer and Program Manager with assignments at Warner-Robins ALC, Air Force Research Lab Propulsion Directorate, and AF Special Operations Command’s 18th Flight Test Squadron. He was also an Assistant Professor of Mathematical Sciences at the Air Force Academy, an intelligence officer at the Defense Intelligence Agency, Division Chief and Director of Operations at AFOTEC Det 3, and Commander of Det 2, Launch and Range SPO, Space and Missile Systems Center. After retirement he led the US Army’s acquisition and fielding of head protection systems (i.e. helmets).
The School of Systems and Logistics has a legacy dating back to the early 1900s but its current designation wasn’t until Feb 1963. The School of Systems and Logistics awarded Master of Science degrees from June of 1963 through June of 1991. In September of 1991 the Graduate Degree portion was separated from the Professional Continuing Education (PCE) portion as an independent school, the School of Logistics and Acquisition. All told, the School of Systems and Logistics awarded over 3,600 MS degrees in 29 years. The School’s primary mission now is to provide PCE courses either in residence at AFIT, on-site at locations throughout the world, or, since the late 1970s, through a variety of distance learning modes. Since 1958 students have completed over 50,000 PCE courses through the school, with courses lasting from as little as one hour via web-based methods to 13 weeks via resident education. The School continues to offer resident and on-site courses, focused workshops, and seminars today, in addition to offering consulting services to DoD.
