Join the SAME DC & Baltimore Posts as we celebrate National Maritime Day 2025 with the N.S. Savannah Association for an open house tour of the N.S. Savannah on Sunday, May 18 from 10 am – 4 pm (Meet up at 1:30 pm). This event is free and open to the public. No RSVP is necessary – All ages welcome!
The N.S. Savannah Association (www.ns-savannah.com) is working to promote, protect & preserve the world’s first nuclear powered merchant ship.
The NS Savannah holds a significant place in maritime history as the world’s first commercial nuclear-powered vessel. She was created under the banner of President Eisenhower’s “Atoms for Peace” program and is the last remaining significant artifact of it. Commissioned in 1959 by the United States Maritime Administration, Savannah was a remarkable feat of engineering and innovation during the Cold War era. Designed for civilian use, the ship offered unparalleled speed and endurance. Savannah’s nuclear propulsion system allowed it to cover extensive distances without refueling, showcasing the potential use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. Her objectives, having been successfully completed, service was discontinued in 1971, marking the end of a pioneering chapter in nuclear-powered transportation. With today’s interest in zero carbon emission shipping, the dream envisioned by Nuclear Ship Savannah may yet come true.
NS Savannah boasts remarkably well-preserved public spaces. This presents a unique opportunity for her future stewards. With minimal restoration, these spaces could be transformed into a captivating “voyage through time” experience. Stepping aboard the NS Savannah wouldn’t just be a museum visit; it would be a chance to immerse yourself in the elegance and innovation of mid-century travel and design, offering an irreplaceable glimpse into a bygone era.
