This session will share a presentation of leadership principles and experiences relevant to businesses that are important to thrive and grow. The panel of highly experienced professionals from the National Academy of Construction will address the strategic importance of leadership and development of effective leadership teams.
Speakers

Lloyd Caldwell, P.E., FSAME, NAC,
Lloyd is a senior advisor in engineering management and Board member of organizations engaged in engineering and construction including small businesses. He is a member of the National Academy of Construction . He served as the Director of Military Programs for the US Army Corps of Engineers prior to retirement following a career in construction management, project and programs management, and organizational leadership. As a member of the Army’s Senior Executive Service, Tier 2, he held the Corps’ senior civilian position for Defense and Interagency/International Programs responsible for policy and technical functions of the Corps’ world-wide engineering, construction, real estate, and environmental activities. He also served as the Army’s Functional Chief for the Chief of Engineers for Career Program 18 (Engineers and Scientists, Resources).
He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Building Construction from Auburn University, Masters of Science in Civil Engineering and Masters in Public Works from the University of Pittsburgh. His recognition includes the Presidential Rank of Distinguished Executive, the AEA Silver Order of the deFleury Medal, and the ASCE Outstanding Projects and Leaders Award for Lifetime Achievement

David J. (Dave) Nash
David is senior vice president of MELE Associates, the president of Dave Nash and Associates. He is a member of the National Academy of Construction. He is a retired admiral of the U.S. Navy. He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Indiana Institute of Technology and a master’s in financial management from the Naval Postgraduate School.
He had a distinguished 33-year career in the Navy, including Commander, Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC). Joining the private sector after his military retirement, Dave launched the BE&K Government Group. He also served as director of the Iraq Program Management Office under the Coalition Provisional Authority and later as director of the Iraq Reconstruction Management Office under the U.S. State Department.
He is the recipient of the Society of Military Engineers (SAME) Golden Eagle Award, the Beavers Award for Heavy Engineering Construction, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Parcel-Sverdrup Award for Civil Engineering Management, the Carroll H. Dunn Award of Excellence from the Construction Industry Institute (CII), the Ted Kennedy Award and Medal from the National Academy of Construction, and the ASCE OPAL Award for Lifetime Achievement, among many honors. He chaired the NRC Board on Infrastructure and the Constructed Environment (BICE). He also chaired the civil engineering section of the National Academy of Engineering. (200)

Bob Prieto is Chairman & CEO of Strategic Program Management LLC focused on strengthening engineering and construction organizations and improving capital efficiency in large capital construction programs. He is a member of the National Academy of Construction.
Previously Bob was a senior vice president of Fluor focused on the development, delivery and turnaround of large, complex projects worldwide across all of the firm’s business lines; and Chairman of Parsons Brinckerhoff where he lead growth initiatives throughout his career with the firm.
Bob’s board level experience includes:

He is author of nine books and over 900 other papers and presentations with a strong focus on creating and sharing knowledge within the profession. Bob is also an inventor on 4 issued patents.
Bob’s industry involvement includes ASCE Industry Leaders Council, National Academy of Construction and Fellow of the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) and he serves on the Millennium Challenge Corporation Advisory Board. He serves on New York University Polytechnic School of Engineering Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Advisory Board and New York University Abu Dhabi Engineering Academic Advisory Council and previously served as a trustee of Polytechnic University. He was appointed as an honorary global advisor for the PM World Journal and Library.

Rear Adm. Mark Handley, P.E., F.SAME, CEC, USN (Ret.)
Mark is a member of the Hampton Roads Post. He was the 102nd National President of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) and currently serves on the SAME Foundation Board of Direction.
He joined SAME in 1995 and was named a Fellow in 2017. Professionally, Handley is Senior Vice President of Federal Programs at AECOM. Prior to his retirement from the U.S. Navy, he commanded the First Naval Construction Division (Seabees). Other senior assignments include Vice Commander, Navy Installations Command; Director of Shore Readiness for the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Logistics); and Commanding Officer, NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic.
Within SAME, Handley also has served as Chair of the Energy & Sustainability Committee, was a founding member of the Investment Committee, and was Hampton Roads Post 1st Vice President. A graduate of Villanova University with a degree in mechanical engineering, Handley holds a Master of Engineering (Construction) from Stanford University. He is the recipient of the St. Thomas of Villanova Alumni Medal and a member of the National Academy of Construction. His military awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, three Legions of Merit, the Bronze Star, four Meritorious Service Medals, three Navy Commendation Medals, and the Navy Achievement Medal.
