Fort Bragg Post Programs

The Fort Bragg Post of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) offers a diverse program of monthly and annual events offering members and student members a multitude of opportunities for training, professional development and networking. These programs are described below, but see the Calendar Page for more information on upcoming program schedules.

Continuing Education Program

The SAME Continuing Education Program is a collection of educational workshops and webinars geared towards architects and engineers, construction and project managers, designers, contractors, and contracting professionals working with the Department of Defense (DOD) and other federal agencies. SAME Continuing Education Courses provide professional development and training with a focus on the DOD market that attendees can’t get elsewhere. In addition, through its network of strategic partner organizations, SAME offers review courses for individuals interested in earning the Certified Construction Manager (CCM), Certified Facility Manager (CFM) and Designated Design-Build Professional (DBIA) credentials. Each continuing education course provides Professional Development Hours (PDH) to support ongoing professional certification requirements.

Continuing Education opportunities vary depending on availability, but in general include the following:

• 4 – 6 Training Meetings (1 PDH each)
• Annual Small Business Workshop (typically 3 – 4 PDH’s)
• Joint Engineer Education/Training Conference/Expo (typically 8 or more PDH’s)

Monthly SAME Meetings

The Fort Bragg post monthly meetings are held at Fort Bragg and as presentations are provided by speakers, they will be posted on the Calendar page. Typically, 4 – 6 of the monthly meetings qualify for continuing Education Credit.

Student Engineering Camps

The Society of American Military Engineers offers a very unique series of engineering camps designed for High School students who excel in math, science and technical courses and are interested in pursuing engineering in college. These one–week camps are high energy, hands–on events for students from across the country and around the world. The camps are led by a professional staff of engineers from both private industry and the military services.

The Fort Bragg Post typically sends one student to each of these camps. Applications will be posted here in February.

There are typically four camps each year, depending upon DOD approvals:

• U.S. Army Construction Camp
• U.S. Air Force Academy Construction Camp
• U.S. U.S. Marine Corps Construction Camp
• U.S. Navy SeaBee Construction Camp

Student Leaders Workshop

The SAME Student Leaders Workshop serves as a forum for Student Leaders from SAME Student Chapters to meet and discuss various facets of their school’s Student Chapter operation. This is a great opportunity to meet with their counterparts, military and civilian engineering professionals from around the country to share ideas on what works and does not work, as well as fixes that can be provided through the Chapter, Post, or national levels of SAME. In addition, military and civilian engineering professionals will meet with the students to answer questions on the practice of engineering, military engineering, and the business of engineering and engineering support to the Department of Defense, along with general career advice.

Students eligible for participation in the Student Leaders Workshop must be:

• Student Members of SAME and either continuing in a Student Chapter leadership position, or slated to assume a leadership position for the current academic year.
• Representing a Student Chapter that is in “good standing” (e.g., Charter on file). 

The student’s travel costs, lodging and meals during the workshop will be handled by SAME. Interested students should speak with their Ft. Bragg Post Mentor for details on the SAME Student Leaders Workshop.

SAME Fellows

The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) has bestowed the designation of Fellow on SAME members who have rendered dedicated and outstanding service to SAME and to military engineering. In 1995, this group of distinguished individuals was organized into the Academy of Fellows to bring all Fellows together to further SAME’s missions and goals. As such, the Fellows Pledge details the role Fellows should play in Leadership and Mentoring for the post.

The Fort Bragg Post has five Fellows:

Post Leaders Workshop

The Fort Bragg Post sends representatives to the Post Leaders Workshop, a three-day training and mentoring extravaganza, held in conjunction with the SAME Student Leaders Workshop and SAME Student Chapter Workshop. The Post Leaders Workshop provides Post Leaders with information on best practices for success and provides access to current DOD procedures and policies. Attendees gain the opportunity to engage with colleagues from across the country and share ideas for achieving the goals set forth in the SAME Strategic Plan. The workshop also gives SAME Young Members a unique opportunity to work with Post Leaders as well as hear from the society’s national leadership, including the national SAME Executive Director and national SAME President.

Young Member Participation

The Fort Bragg Post normally sends a Young Member of the post to the Leaders Workshop. This is a great opportunity for young members meet with their counterparts, military and civilian engineering professionals from around the country to share ideas of how to help SAME relate to the younger members.

Student Participation

The SAME Student Leaders Workshop serves as a forum for Student Leaders from SAME Student Chapters to meet and discuss various facets of their school’s Student Chapter operation. The Society of American Military Engineers mission, in collaboration with the Military Services, offers a series of engineering/STEM camps designed for High School students who excel in math, science and technology courses and are interested in pursuing engineering, architecture, or a related field in college. These one–week camps are high energy, hands–on events for students from across the country and around the world. The camps are led by a professional staff of engineers from both private industry and the uniformed military services.

Typically, Four Camps are Offered . . . Army, Air Force, Marines & Navy . . .

Each camp has its own unique focus and theme and is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to learn what engineers do from professional engineers, learn practical skills and gain exposure to the military services. Your first step is to determine if you are eligible and then go through the application process for the camp you select.

The Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg) Post of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) again has college scholarships it will award. Scholarships will be awarded to the most deserving applicants based on academic achievement, participation in extracurricular activities, and their desire to pursue an engineering based degree in college. The amount of the scholarship award will be based on the merits of the applicant. There will be one award given to an applicant, selected by the committee, which has the potential to be a perpetual award for the duration of their undergraduate efforts, for a maximum of four years. All other awards are one time awards. Past winners, and past applicants that meet the eligibility requirements are welcome to apply again for the scholarship.

The Fort Bragg Post of the Society of American Military Engineers recently awarded scholarships at its June general membership meeting.  We again owe a heartfelt Thank You to our Sustaining Members and general membership whose support to our annual Spring Golf Tournament and other fundraising events makes our scholarship program possible.
