DCHWS Scholarship

Sophie Bodek is the recipient of the first DCHWS Scholarship established by the Philadelphia Post. This scholarship was developed with proceeds from event in the Post’s Education and Mentoring Fund to specifically support a student studying in the environmental field.

Ms. Bodek is a senior with honors pursuing a BA in Earth Science and a minor in Mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania in the Department of Earth and Environmental Science. Her concentration is in Geology, and she is involved in research on sedimentology for her undergraduate thesis titled “How Pebbles Round and Rocks Fragment: Particle Shape Evolution According to Transport Mechanism.”

Ms. Bodek was a student of Philadelphia Post Board Member, Maria Andrews, an Associate Director of Undergraduate Programs in the Department of Earth and Environmental Science at University of Pennsylvania. Ms. Bodek has been heavily involved in the department by becoming a member of the Earth and Environmental Science Undergraduate Advisory Board (UAB). This a group run by students who serve as a liaison between students and faculty. Currently, she is the Communications Director of the UAB. Additionally, Ms. Bodek has contributed to the creation of a new club, called the Penn Geology Society. The Geology Society is a group that connects undergraduate and graduate students through field trips to local geologically significant areas and promotes career development. She is currently the Vice President of the Penn Geology Society. These experiences coupled with her research experience and scientific knowledge have facilitated Ms. Bodek with the skills to succeed and continue her passion for environmental stewardship.
